Text taken from Sheffield people & planet informational leaflet:-

Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) works by drilling through the water table into layers of shale rock, then injecting a high pressure cocktail of water, sand and toxic chemicals.
This releases the gas stored in the rock, which is then collected.

Barclays own 97% of a company called Third Energy, who are fracking in North Yorkshire.
On Monday the 23rd May 2016, North Yorkshire County Council approved an application by Third Energy to allow experimental fracking at the KM8 Well in Ryedale.

- Fracking has been known to cause earthquakes.
- A large quantity of trucks is required to transport fracking fluid, gas and fresh water.
- In the UK, used toxic and radioactive fracking fluid has been left in ponds on abandoned fracking sites. The composition of this fluid is a 'trade secret'.

- In Texas and Pennsylvania, ground water has become contaminated due to faulty wells.
- The technology to keep radioactive and toxic fracking fluid from entering the aquifier is not developed enough to prevent accidents.
- The UK water authority has warned that the large amounts of water used for fracking may increase water shortages.

- If we are to meet Global and UK targets on climate change, we must keep 90% of the fossil fuels we know about in the ground.
- The government must prioritise investing in renewable energy if are to avoid devastating climate change.

Take your money out of Barclays!
- Barclays depends on its high street customers to provide capital for its investments.
